چکیده

Overlay networks among cooperating hosts have recently emerged as a viable solution to several challenging problems, including multicasting, routing, content distribution, and peer-to-peer services. Application-level overlays, however, incur a performance penalty over router-level solutions. This paper characterizes this performance penalty for overlay multicast trees via experimental data, simulations, and theoretical models. Experimental data and simulations illustrate that (i) the average delay and the number of hops between parent and child hosts in overlay trees generally decrease, and (ii) the degree of hosts generally decreases, as the level of the host in the overlay tree increases. Overlay multicast routing strategies, together with powerlaw and small-world Internet topology characteristics, are causes of the observed phenomena. We compare three overlay multicast protocols with respect to latency, bandwidth, router degrees, and host degrees. We also quantify the overlay tree cost. Results reveal that for small , where is the total number of hops in all overlay links, is the average number of hops on the source to receiver unicast paths, and is the number of members in the overlay multicast session.

Issues in Overlay Multicast Networks: Dynamic Routing and Communication Cost

Overlay networks are becoming a popular vehicle for deploying advanced services in the Internet. One such service is multicast. Unlike conventional IP multicast, which requires universal deployment of network layer mechanisms, the overlay multicast model leverages the existing unicast mechanism and offers many service flexibilities to applications. Implementing multicast without requiring netwo...

Routing in Overlay Multicast Networks

Multicast services can be provided either as a basic network service or as an application-layer service. Higher level multicast implementations often provide more sophisticated features, and can provide multicast services, where no network layer support is available. Overlay multicast networks offer an intermediate option, potentially combining the flexibility and advanced features of applicati...

Efficient Overlay Multicast Routing for Hybrid Networks

Multicast can be done on link layer, IP layer, and application layer respectively. The application level overlay multicast is easier to deploy as compared to non overlay multicast but at the cost of efficiency. However, the utilization of these approaches is limited by current Internet architecture. Overlay and non overlay integrated solution have not yet been proposed for hybrid networks. In t...

NCOM: network coding based overlay multicast in wireless networks

The capacity of wireless networks are increasingly challenged by the traffic stresses generated by data-intensive applications. Multicast is a bandwidth-efficient solution to simultaneously disseminate data to multiple receivers. In this paper, we present NCOM, a network coding based overlay multicast design, that integrates Network Coding (NC), Opportunistic Routing (OR), and cross-layer link ...
